Aim of the Music Course

We offer a course that is intentionally built around the needs of the student. This means we can accommodate the aspiring rock guitarist and amateur classical pianist all the same.  Students get the opportunity to showcase their growth and development in our Student Showcase evening throughout the year

Accreditation & External Examinations & Internal Assessments

Students are encouraged to enrol for the RSL Graded Exams (or any other independent graded exam that is appropriate) but students are free to also attend lessons for recreational purposes only without entering any external exams. Please note however that regular assessments are part of our syllabus and therefore students’ progress will be assessed in quarterly formal assessments, regardless of whether the student has selected to enrol for an external graded exam

Required books to be purchased

All music students will be required to purchase a method book according to which their lessons will be structured. The cost of the method books range from R100 (or less) to R400. The more expensive books tend to be used for more than one year while the less expensive books are typically completed in a year or less. Instruments to be purchased & Importance of having practice facilities at home!

In addition, it is highly recommended that students have an instrument to practice on at home. The price of the instrument can vary widely, depending on what is immediately required and the investment you are willing to make at this time. Since the desire to learn a musical instrument often fades in the face of the discipline and practice regimen required, parents often choose to wait a few months before purchasing an instrument. However, it is worth keeping in mind that the student’s development will be greatly stinted if they do not have access to facilities to practice during the week. A practicing student spends 5 minutes of a typical lesson revisiting the work covered in a previous lesson, leaving 25 minutes of the lesson to cover new work. By contrast, a non-practicing student spends 15-25 minutes of a typical lesson repeating work that was covered in the previous lesson, often leaving only 5 minutes of the lesson to cover new material. For advice on how to select an appropriate and affordable instrument, please talk to your teacher who will be very willing to provide guidance and refer you to good music stores where a suitable instrument may be purchased

Learning outcomes
